Clients often ask how many past lives they’ve lived. It’s a simple question to answer, but the answer is not very meaningful. Why do some people have 60 past lives on earth, and others only a few? The short answer is that we only experience transformation while living in a human body. The human experience is necessary for learning and resolving negative karma.
Our souls are a piece of God, and they know exactly who they are. Between lives, the soul returns to God. This is the place called heaven. Our soul is our eternal life, and it experiences oneness and presence with God. But our soul also wants to experience being human and so chooses to incarnate in a human body and have more human experiences. When we learn from our human experiences, we resolve negative karmic patterns and raise the soul’s vibration rate. Then we experience our divine nature in this life.
I was promised eternal life.
Christians believe in one long eternal life, in heaven with God. Especially if they’ve been very good people. Eternal life is real; except we should probably say “eternal lives.” We are spiritual beings that sometimes occupy a body. Our soul is eternal, but it doesn’t experience just one life. It experiences an eternity of lives, especially if our soul really likes the human experience, or wants to resolve negative karma from previous lives. This is why we often share multiple lives with the same souls. We call these soul contracts, and they are intended to experience a new role or situation or maybe address a “wrong” from a past life.
I want to honor my soul contracts.
There is no taboo in breaking a soul contract. In fact, breaking a soul contract may be the primary goal for one life. An example of this is a soulmate contract, which is often romanticized. This particular contract is negative because two souls exchange energy that is not good for either party. When the contract is active, both souls experience repeating (negative) patterns until they break the contract.
The real purpose of soul contracts is often to experience, resolve, grow, and move forward independently. A soul contract with your parents is a perfect vibrational match at the time of your birth. But as you mature and gain independence, it is appropriate to break that contract and move forward in your own direction. This is how negative karmic patterns are resolved, and this is how we get in-touch with our higher self. When we connect with our higher self, we become our true Self, the person God created us to be.
Eternity is not an exit plan.
Some religious leaders want us to think that life is just something to get through, and heaven is the true reward. Honestly, this is why the concept of multiple lives is unfamiliar to some. The message is that if this life isn’t comfortable, maybe it’s better to ignore it and keep an eye toward heaven. I also hear from people who want to exit this life soon so they can start over. If there is no spiritual progress in this life, the next life will include the same unpleasant situations because the soul’s vibration remains the same.
Both ideas, getting through or getting out of life, devalue the experience of life itself and are examples of spiritual bypassing. When we engage with spiritual bypassing, we avoid the realities of life, which are often unpleasant and sometimes painful. If we never engage with the experiences of this life, we don’t learn or heal. And we don’t experience our higher self. Rather, we experience an endless loop of unfulfilling lives.
