How do I help to make the world a kinder place?
Lately, I’ve found it difficult to get up and going in the morning. I don’t spend much time with the news, but what filters through to me is disheartening. It seems the world is a mean and petty place. And I wonder what to do to make the world a kinder place.
Thomas Merton, a 20th century mystic, said, “You do not need to know precisely what is happening, or exactly where it is all going. What you need is to recognize the possibilities and challenges offered by the present moment, and to embrace them with courage, faith, and hope.”
Courage, faith, and hope make a difference.
Changing the world starts right here, with you. In fact, you are the only thing you can control. Embodying the qualities of courage, faith, and hope are what keep you on your path, and it’s the way to put kindness into the world.
Courage gets you out of your comfort zone.
Battling demons and facing evil is not the definition of courage. Courage means choosing something new, to break out of patterns that keep you safely in your comfort zone. Choosing courage is speaking your truth, resisting actions just to get along, and remaining true to yourSelf. When we stay safe, we often do so because we want to be liked, or admired, or receive some kind of benefit. Staying safe is the biggest way we betray our true Self because we opt to “go along” rather than choose our true nature. Betraying our true Self is also how we accumulate negative Karma because we make choices that are incongruent with our true Self.
Faith is trusting your true Self.
When you act in faith, you trust your true Self. You are fully human, and yet you also carry a piece of divinity, your soul, within you. If you love and trust your true Self, you are more likely to make choices that align with your Divine nature. Positive choices raise your consciousness and expands your understanding of God, the world, and yourself. Trusting yourself breaks you out of old habits of staying safe so you learn and grow.
Hope means knowing all will be well.
Hope means that you trust all will be well no matter what happens. Remember, you are in control of nothing beyond yourself. Praying and meditation are strongly encouraged because these practices change you. They rewire your ego to understand that for every request you make, there is another beloved creation of God making exactly the opposite request. And God is not choosing one of you over the other, even if you feel that person is dead wrong. True hope is knowing that you are not in control, yet all will be well because you are infinitely loved no matter what.
