Stay Grounded

The world feels chaotic and unsafe right now. Sorry, let me correct this statement. The world IS chaotic and unsafe. And although you may feel helpless, there is one thing that makes a world of difference. Ground yourself.

The world is a dangerous place. This feeling of danger may be new for you, but oppression, marginalization, hunger, and poverty have always existed. If feeling insecure is new, it may mean you are in a position of privilege and isolated from the suffering of others. When feelings of fear and uncertainty knock on your door, it’s time to ground yourself with empathy and compassion.

How do I get or stay grounded?

To get or stay grounded means to let go of all your worries, fears, plans, and attachments. Grounding yourself is recognition that you are not in control of what happens in the world, but you can always control your own actions and responses.

Buddhism teaches that all suffering is caused by your attachments. It is radical work to release attachments in a world where attachments often represent safety. To be grounded and free from suffering means detaching from your personality, your bank account, your relationships, and your future. Having these things in your life is not bad, just like money is not the root of all evil. It’s the love of money that causes problems.

Practice grounding meditation or centering prayer.

There is no easy path to staying grounded or centered. We call this Spiritual practice because that’s exactly what is required, regular and repeated actions to reach new levels of capability. And it takes time, years of practice, to become proficient. Therefore, Spiritual practice never ends.

Here’s how to get started:

Sit comfortably in a chair with your feet flat on the ground.
Close your eyes or soften your gaze. Breathe deeply, feeling your breath fill your entire body. Release your breath completely.
Select a sacred word or image to turn (and return) your focus to. Do not let your mind take over. Do not try to connect with your guides or Spirit. Just turn back in, gently laying any thoughts, worries, or concerns beside you.
Start with a 5-minute practice twice/day. If you lay down your thoughts 1000 times in 5 minutes, that is great practice!
As you become better at staying in that grounded place, increase the time of your practice.

Grounding is the starting point.

When chaos and fear call us to action, it is critical to ground ourselves first. When we are grounded, our vision is clearer, our actions more intentional and we see beyond our own ego and self-preservation. Maintaining security and attachments is no longer our primary driver. You see what is yours to do with clearer eyes to act with courage and intention.
