We are created as holy, sacred creatures of a loving Creator, our Original Grace. We call this sacred essence our soul, our eternal connection to God, Creator, Divine Source. It is the divine particle within us that can never be separated from Creator.
Unfortunately, the forefathers of the Imperial Church (the church that arose from Rome) decided that it was not in the empire’s best interest to honor all life as sacred. How could they send men out to fight the enemy if every life mattered (both “our” lives and the enemy)? How can poverty and the exploitation of natural resources be justified if all people and all creation are sacred? And how could the church save lost sinners if they admitted there was nothing that needed saving?
This is why Christianity came to focus on Original Sin, instead of Original Grace. Without the burden of sin, the church didn’t have much to do because it means that everyone is already perfectly divine. People who understand they are sacred creations don’t need the church’s rules for achieving salvation.
We receive Original Grace when we recognize the sacredness in all creation and understand that we too are sacred. Original Grace restores us to our essence, our Divine Nature. It allows us to gaze with love upon everyone and everything in the world, including ourselves. We don’t have the capacity to put love out into the world if we do not also love our true Self.
Yes, as human beings we all make mistakes, we sin against others and against ourselves. Every time we take actions that disrespect the sacredness of any of God’s creation, we chip away or cover up a piece of our own true essence. It’s like putting our soul out in the pig pen and feeding it garbage. Our soul gets muddied up and it looks ugly on the surface, but that divine spark is still shining and loved by God. We can’t do anything to stop God from loving us because how could God possibly be disappointed with a part of God’s self?
I wish I’d understood Original Grace and my Divine Nature decades ago. I may have avoided unhealthy relationships, unfulfilling jobs, and the trap of staying in those situations to please others. Understanding and loving my Divine Nature has allowed me to speak and act with freedom. I experience more joy in my life. I no longer worry about what anyone else is doing or what they think about me. It is my responsibility to make choices that reflect my true Self. Not my husband, my children, or my birth family. Only I can do this work.
