Purpose

What is my purpose in life?

In the past few months a question has caught my attention several times – What is my purpose in life? This question arises from a desire to understand our lives and all the experiences we’ve lived. But I believe the deeper question about understanding one’s purpose is to feel valued, and that our life matters.

The response to this question is simple, yet potentially devastating to your ego.

No one has a preordained purpose for their life. Each of us is the proud owner of Free Will. You have no strings attached and your every thought and action are not controlled by God. And because of free will it is impossible to predict the future. You are free to begin making new choices and change the trajectory of your life every day of your life.

Humans have a strong desire to know our worth. We want to know that we can make a difference. And we hope, hope, hope that all the mistakes we’ve made, and all the negative experiences we’ve had were training for a great and heroic event yet to occur. This desire for a divine purpose comes from the ego. Our ego wants to feel important and claim credit for all the “good” things that happen. It also wants someone else to blame for the “bad” things in our life. To gracefully live with the consequences of our choices is potentially devastating to the ego.

You are worthy and you make a difference.

We all exist because of a generous and miraculous outpouring of love from the Creator. You are worthy because it is your divine birthright. Simply because you exist. And the reason you exist in this time and place simply to experience being human.

It’s a wonderful thing to have no strings attached. The story of Pinocchio illustrates this story perfectly. With strings attached, we only move at the whim of the puppet master. We aren’t truly alive. But a great outpouring of love animated us and gave us true life. We can sing, and dance! And we can wander off into dangerous territory as well. But despite all our bad choices and our lies, we are still loved in ways we can never earn.

You are the powerful creator of your own experience.

None of us are here to execute perfectly on a divine plan. To be fully human means we can grow, learn, make mistakes, and experience the consequences of all our choices. This cycle continues throughout our lifetime. Well, it happens if we are fully engaged in our human experience. Unfortunately, there are many people who choose to believe they are the victim of circumstance, and they deny their power to create their own experience.

We live with the unconditional love of God, which means there are no strings to pull. You will never, ever, lose unconditional love, no matter how many bad choices you make. There are no rewards or punishment under the umbrella of unconditional love, only experiences and consequences for us to learn from.

  1. Good one! I wish traditional Christianity would embrace these truths instead of weighing down so many well-intentioned folks with so much guilt and judgment. It’s a hard worldview to shake.
